Do the Visit Japan Web registration the night before — it's optional in 2026, but Kansai's joint kiosk takes the QR and passport in one step and the digital lane is the short one on a holiday. Nankai Rapi:t to Namba ラピート
Nankai's station is on the walkway from Terminal 1 (Terminal 2 adds a 7–9 min free shuttle). The blue Rapi:t is all reserved seats — ¥1,670 at the machine, or the ¥1,410 digital ticket — and takes 34–39 minutes, every half hour. If the next one is 25 minutes away, the plain Airport Express on the same platform is ¥970 and 45 minutes. Both end at Nankai Namba; leave by the south gate and the hotel is a 6-minute walk. Skip the JR Haruka — it doesn't come to Namba.

Check-in is 15:00; Talk Shop takes the bags. Three minutes away, Wanaka's Sennichimae main shop is the takoyaki Osakans name first — crisp shell, molten dashi centre, benches on the pavement beside the Grand Kagetsu comedy theatre. Holiday hours from 09:30, cash only, a five-minute line. Hungrier? Fukutaro, two minutes further, opens at 12:00 on holidays for negiyaki with beef tendon and a mountain of scallion.

Tigers vs DeNA at Koshien
The only Hanshin home game while you're in town, on a holiday afternoon at Japan's oldest ballpark with its loudest crowd — the beer girls, the seventh-inning balloons, the whole thing. The Hanshin line runs direct from Osaka-Namba to Koshien in about 25–30 minutes. It only works with a morning landing and a ticket bought now; you're back in Namba by 18:00.

Namba on foot
The lazy version. Namba Yasaka's 12-metre lion head (14 min west; the gates shut at 17:00, so it's now or never), the planted terraces of Namba Parks, the figure shops of Den Den Town, and a first pass through Kuromon before the stalls close around five — knowing that a holiday thins the market out and tomorrow morning is the real visit. Check in properly at 15:00 somewhere in the middle.

Happy hour, then the standing bars of Ura-Namba 裏なんば
One ¥800 drink at Talk Shop (happy hour 16:00–19:00), then one block west into Ura-Namba, the warren of six-stool counters behind Namba where about seventy percent of the customers are locals. Start at Ushitora — it opens at 16:00, earlier than anyone else, and its yuzu namero and ¥500 three-snack plate are the neighbourhood's calling card. At 18:00 sharp walk into Tachinomi Sai for sake poured into wine glasses by staff who steer you by taste; it fills within minutes on a holiday. Then Sakanaya Hidezou, a fishmonger's own standing bar, for that morning's sashimi off the blackboard. Thirty to forty minutes a stop, one drink each, cash on the counter.

Tombori River Cruise as the neon comes on
Twenty minutes at water level from the Tazaemonbashi pier beside Don Quijote, with a live guide, under the Glico sign and the arched bridges. Sunset is 17:59 and the signs light up about half an hour later, so the 18:30 sailing gets the switch-on mid-loop. Off the boat, stand on Ebisubashi for the blue-hour photo, then walk north up the roofed Shinsaibashi-suji arcade and back down for the full wall of light.

Kashiwaya Hatikin — charcoal yakitori from a poultry wholesaler, morning-slaughtered chicken, coarse tsukune, a grilled oyakodon to finish, open till 02:00, cards accepted; reserve for four or more. Or Fukutaro if you skipped it at lunch — the queue peaks after 19:00, so this is the gamble slot. Or Mizuno on Dotonbori, the 1945 Bib Gourmand, if the line is under thirty minutes: the yam-batter yamaimo-yaki is the lightest okonomiyaki in the city.

Bible Club, then Bar Nayuta
Fifteen minutes north. Bible Club Osaka is a concealed door in a Shinsaibashi basement: a pre-Prohibition speakeasy with an antique till, crystal glassware, a Negroni Flip and a whisky-heavy back bar. It's open tonight and shut on Wednesday, so it's a Monday bar. ¥800 table charge; cigars allowed. Then five minutes west to Amerikamura: find the building opposite Triangle Park marked only by a geometric symbol, take the lift to 5F and duck through the child-sized door into Bar Nayuta — no menu, Asia's 50 Best two years running, name a spirit or a mood.

bird/56, Hozenji at midnight, and the 24-hour bowls
Walk back via JAZZ BAR bird/56, a third-floor vinyl room a minute from the Dotonbori crowds, open every night until 01:00 (JACK'S INN in the yokocho is closed Mondays — save it). Then Hozenji Yokocho with nobody in it: lanterns, and the Fudo Myoo so drenched by four centuries of ladled water that it's entirely moss — rinse your hands, ladle, ask. Hungry again: Hanamaruken next to the temple is 24 hours (the braised pork rib is eaten with your hands), Ichiran's solo booths on Dotonbori never close, and Tsurutontan serves udon on the canal until 06:00.

A 1934 kissaten four minutes from the hotel — velvet booths, waiters who have been there since the Showa era, a house blend so dark it's opaque. The egg-sandwich morning set runs until about 11:00 and is the antidote to a convenience-store breakfast.

Kuromon Ichiba, properly 黒門市場
Six hundred metres of covered market one block from the hotel. It's breakfast theatre rather than a bargain now, so order like a local: tuna skewers from Entoki Maguro (a stall since 1927), oysters shucked to order, warm tamagoyaki, and Wanaka's Kuromon takoyaki if yesterday's wasn't enough. Skip the photogenic uni cups and the "Kobe" skewers — worst value on the street. A holiday means some stalls are shuttered; the ones that matter aren't. Eat at the counter, not walking.
The famous market-sushi breakfast at Endo Sushi is not possible this trip — the Central Wholesale Market is closed 20–23 September. Daiki Suisan on Dotonbori or Harukoma in Tenma are the substitutes.

Shinsekai: kushikatsu before the queue 新世界
Two stops south on the Midosuji to Dobutsuen-mae (buy the ¥620 Enjoy Eco Card at the machine — it pays for itself by Umeda). Yaekatsu in the Janjan Yokocho arcade: seventy years, 49 counter seats, a no-phones rule and the fluffy yam batter locals rate above Daruma; beer at eleven in the morning is normal here. Or the 1929 Daruma Sohonten under the scowling-chef mascot, where the one-dip rule was born — the sauce trough is shared and the free cabbage is your spoon. Tengu, two doors from Yaekatsu, is shut today.

Tsutenkaku, Billiken and the slide 通天閣
The 1956 tower over the retro-Showa streets. The decks are ¥1,500 with an online time slot (required since April), and the Tower Slider — a 60-metre spiral from the third floor to the basement in about ten seconds — is ¥1,100 more and worth it for the story. Rub Billiken's feet. If it's pouring, Spa World next to the station is the eight-storey bath park, ¥2,700 on a holiday — and it bans all tattoos, covered or not.

Shitennoji's Higan fair, then Tennoji 四天王寺
A fifteen-minute walk north-east to Japan's first state temple (593 AD), which happens to be in full Higan festival mode on your dates: flea-market and food stalls for the 22nd's Taishi fair, the central garan free all week. Then the Ten-Shiba lawn at Tennoji Park. Abeno Harukas 300 is right there — Japan's tallest observatory outside Tokyo, ¥2,200 — but you've got a tower in the evening too, so pick one: Harukas by day, or Umeda Sky by night.

Midosuji, the whole length north
Tennoji to Umeda is 16 minutes on the red line — the entire spine of the city in one ride. From Umeda it's a 15-minute walk (or one Tanimachi-line stop from Higashi-Umeda) to Nakazakicho.

Pre-war wooden row-houses that escaped the air raids, five minutes from Umeda's towers, now dozens of tiny cafés, vintage stores and galleries. cafe Taiyo no Tou is the anchor — cake, coffee and vintage clutter, cash only. It's an afternoon place: best 13:00–16:00, dead by evening.

Tenjinbashisuji → the Tenma standing bars 天満
Ten minutes east and you're at the north end of Japan's longest shopping arcade — 2.6 km, 800 shops. Walk it south to JR Temma, where the densest cheap-izakaya warren in the city starts. Beer Belly Tenma, Minoh Beer's own taproom inside the market building, has been pouring since 15:00 (15 taps, cask ale). Then Dengeki Horumon Tsugie: standing yakiniku at a ten-square-metre charcoal counter, offal by the plate, cash, gloriously smoky. Tenma Sakagura for one more with the regulars, until 21:30. Harukoma, the cult oversized-sushi counter, is normally shut Tuesdays but may shift its day off for the holiday — worth a call.

Umeda Sky Building, after dark 空中庭園
One Loop Line stop from Temma to Osaka Station, then a ten-minute walk through the underpass. The open-air ring 173 m up between two towers, reached by a glass escalator across mid-air, faces the Yodo river and the whole lit grid. Open until 22:30, ¥2,000. If you did Harukas at lunch, swap this for the free Grand Green Osaka lawn in front of the station and its Time Out Market.

Kitashinchi: Craftroom 北新地
Twelve minutes' walk from the Sky Building, two floors underground in the retro Ekimae Daiichi building, in a maze of tiny izakaya with a sign you can walk past: Craftroom, the first Osaka bar ever on Asia's 50 Best main list, Ryu Fujii's six-seat counter, a seasonal menu, soft jazz. Ten seats — reserve, and confirm it opens on the holiday. Craft Beer Base Bud is on the same floor for a beer either side (phone first; its listings disagree on its day off). Bar,K, three minutes away and the best old-school bar in the district, closes on public holidays, so it's a phone-first bonus. Juniper Trinity and Augusta Tarlogie are both shut Tuesdays.

Last train, or a ¥2,000 taxi
The last southbound Midosuji from Umeda is around 00:08 on the weekday timetable, and a holiday timetable can run a few minutes earlier — be on the platform by 23:45. Namba is eight minutes and ¥240. A taxi from Kitashinchi is ¥2,000–2,500 and 20 minutes, plus 20% after 22:00.

Check-out is 11:00 but you'll be across town by then — do it on the app or the kiosk on the way out and leave the bags with Talk Shop. A 7-Eleven egg sandwich and a canned coffee on the walk to the station is a legitimate Osaka breakfast; nobody judges.

Osaka Castle, before the buses 大阪城
Sennichimae line from Nippombashi to Tanimachi 9-chome, then two stops up the Tanimachi line to Tanimachi 4-chome — about 15 minutes, or a ¥1,500 taxi. The park is free and the moats and 30-metre stone walls are the point; the 1931 concrete keep is a museum with an elevator and a holiday queue. Better: the Tamon and Sengan turrets are open daily 19–27 September, a rare interior, on a ¥900 ticket that includes the Nishinomaru lawn — the best view of the tower, and the exact geography of Godzilla's 1955 demolition of it.

Tamatsukuri Cathedral — Gracia & Ukon
Fifteen minutes' walk east of the castle, on the site of the Hosokawa mansion: St Mary's Cathedral, with statues of Hosokawa Gracia and Blessed Takayama Ukon in the plaza and a hundred stained-glass windows inside. Open 09:00–16:00, free, quiet. The Etchū well where Gracia's story ended in 1600 is a few minutes away. History rather than scripture — the full story is in What Happened Here below. Tamatsukuri station on the Loop Line is right there for the way back.

Lunch in Minami: Imai's kitsune udon
Dotonbori Imai, since 1946 — tatami rooms and hush ten metres from the neon, two slabs of sweet fried tofu in a kombu-and-mackerel dashi. It normally closes on Wednesdays but opens when the Wednesday is a holiday, which today is. Or be at Mizuno for the 11:00 opening if you missed it on Monday, or the whole-bluefin conveyor belt at Daiki Suisan next door. Menya Joroku, the ramen counter near the hotel, is shut today.

Amerikamura and Orange Street, by daylight
The bars of Monday night in their afternoon clothes. LiLo Coffee Roasters — Osaka's third-wave original, a standing bar the size of a closet with eighteen single origins on the board. Ten minutes west, Orange Street in Horie is the select-shop-and-café strip, calmer than Amerikamura; the boutiques that rest on Mondays and Tuesdays are open again today. Hokkyokusei, the tatami house that invented omurice in 1925, is the retro lunch if noodles weren't enough.

Two minutes apart in the Ebisubashi-suji arcade. Rikuro's jiggling soufflé cheesecake, ¥965, baked in front of the queue — a bell rings when a batch comes out; the shop closes at 20:00 so this is the window. 551 Horai's butaman, 170,000 pork buns a day hand-wrapped in the window, the official smell of Osaka trains — buy the box last, still warm. The drugstores in the arcade do the tax-free paperwork at the till (¥5,000 minimum, passport) — this trip is still under the old system; the airport-refund scheme starts in November.

Bar36 on the Swissôtel's 36th floor opens at 15:00 — floor-to-ceiling glass over Namba, daylight sliding into dusk, and Nankai Namba station is directly underneath, so the Rapi:t platform is an elevator ride away. If the flight is late, JACK'S INN in Hozenji Yokocho — the 1979 jazz bar that was closed on Monday — opens at 17:00.

The equinox sunset rite at Shitennoji 日想観
Once a year, on the equinox, the sun sets exactly through Shitennoji's west stone torii and the temple holds the Nissōkan — monks and a crowd facing the sun as it drops, a practice older than the city. Be at the west gate by 17:15; sunset is 17:56. From Tennoji, the JR Haruka goes straight to KIX in 30 minutes (¥1,820), so you don't even have to come back to Namba — just collect the bags first.
